Renae participated in the Cowork Coplay Program in Adelaide in 2023. She is a qualified chef and full-time mum with diverse career experience. She creates costumes, constantly learning new creative techniques, and is connected with a vibrant community across Australia.

Here she shares with us her journey as a Defence spouse, how cosplay has helped her find connection and confidence, and the personal goals she continues to work toward

Renae Young, partner of a Defence member, shares her story

Can you please share what you have achieved or experienced since completing the Cowork Coplay program and meeting other people in your defence/veteran community?

Since completing the Cowork Coplay program, I’ve gained a lot more confidence in putting myself out there and pursuing things that bring me joy, even when they’re completely different from what others might expect. One of the biggest things I’ve achieved has been rediscovering my love for cosplay.

When I was first posted to Adelaide in 2022, I didn’t know anyone and felt quite isolated. Attending a local pop culture convention reignited an old passion, and what started as a small personal project quickly turned into something much bigger. I’ve since created my own cosplay page on Instagram, learned new creative and practical skills like sewing, painting, wig styling, and photography collaboration, and built a network of friends across Australia.

Cosplay has become a major part of my life—I now plan my year around conventions, travel interstate to events, and have even been invited as a featured guest at some. It’s given me a sense of achievement and belonging that I didn’t expect to find after so many Defence moves.

Most importantly, being part of the Cowork Coplay community reminded me that it’s okay to do something just for myself. Even though cosplay isn’t career-focused, it’s been a huge boost to my confidence and wellbeing. And no matter where we’re posted next, I know I’ll have friends in the cosplay community wherever we go.”

What are you career or personal goals at the moment?

At this point I would love to just continue to improve my skills and work on more complex cosplay builds. I do hope to enter some competitions in the near future but for now I don’t want to pressure myself if I feel I am not ready for that. At the end of the day, it’s a hobby and should always be about having a good time!”

Renae found connection and creativity through Cowork Coplay

When Renae joined the Cowork Coplay program in Adelaide in 2023, she was navigating the challenges of Defence life, frequent moves, and the isolation that can come with starting over in a new city. Having recently reignited her passion for cosplay, she was also rediscovering her own creativity and confidence.

Through the program, Renae found a supportive space where she could connect with other Defence partners who understood the unique ups and downs of this lifestyle. She valued the opportunity to have time for herself, to share her experiences, and to feel part of a community where she belonged.

“Being a Defence spouse can be very lonely,” Renae reflected.

“Rediscovering my love of Cosplay—the creativity and the community—gave me something of my own, and Cowork Coplay reminded me that I wasn’t alone in the journey.”

The program gave her both practical support and meaningful conversations, helping her continue building her sense of identity and connection. For Renae, the content in the Cowork Coplay program was a reminder that community, creativity, and personal wellbeing are just as important as focusing on employment options.

Long-lasting impact from program

Renae’s story highlights how Cowork Coplay creates ripple effects far beyond the 8 weeks. Designed for partners and spouses of current- and former-serving members, the program provides the space and support to explore personal meaning, new opportunities and to thrive.

Thank you, Renae, for sharing your story with us. We wish you all the best in your new adventures.
